The Clymer manual and the Suzuki shop manual does not address a backfire problem or solution. The reason is that in correcting this problem, you are going against the emissions control fix, deemed necessary by the company, to be in compliance with the law!
The air mixture screw DOES NOT solve the backfire problem;---- The removal of the WHITE SPACER does. Read the many postings on this solution, they are further down the list of interesting things to do. By allowing your engine to make noise above the legal limit (installation of illegal Jardine pipes) you have notably made the backfire very annoying, as you have stated!
BTW: Removing the seat does help to work on the carburetor and in most cases necessary. Also if you really want to know how to adjust the air mixture screw (for idle only) it is covered with a brass plug, which has to be drilled out. The mixture setting is done at the factory and should not have to be changed. However, changing of the exhaust systems may require a different main jet size (usually larger size) to keep the engine from overheating.
